The Portuguese historian Father Manuel Barrados writes as follows about a Karava weeding he witnessed in 1613 in Moratuwa.
"The wedded pair come walking on white cloths, with which the ground is successively carpeted, and are covered above with others of the same kind, which the nearest relatives hold in their extended hands after the fashion of a canopy. The symbols that they carry are white discs, and candles lighted in the day-time, and certain shells which they keep playing on in place of bag-pipes. All these are Royal Symbolswhich the former kings conceded to this race of people, that being strangers they should inhabit the coasts of Ceilao, and none but they or those to whom they give leave can use them. …, what causes wonder in this and in other people of this kind, is, that although so wretched, miserable, and poor, they have so many points of honour, that they would rather die than go contrary to it." (Monthly Literary Register 4, 1896 page 134)

Across the Palk Strait , the kinsmen of the Karavas too used similar insignia in the past. In 1917, H. R. Pate describes a wedding as follows: "A peculiar feature of the wedding is the procession to the bride’s house with virudus or banners supposed to be the insignia of the Kingly ancestors of the race. The emblems consist of 21 flags embroidered with representations of various objects, animate and inanimate, such as a Snake, a Peacock, a Palmyra , a Chank, the Sun and Moon an Elephant. A Fish and so on. In addition to these a large Umbrella, a Shield and other trappings are carried. The bridegroom wears a costume called KAPA resembling the state robes of Jathi Thalavi More and white cloths are spread before him in his path". (Madras District Gazetteer 123 & 124)

This is one of the main flags of the Karavas . The Sun and Moon flag is
used to-date at family ceremonies such as weddings and funerals of the Karavas.

These are royal symbols of the Karava race and these were also the real royal symbols of ancient Sri Lanka. The Lion was not such a royal symbol although it too was used by the Karavas on exclusively Karava flags. The The Sun symbol displayed as the central symbol on the royal throne of Sri Lanka. he Sun was the recurrent royal symbol throughout Sri Lanka's pre colonial history. The Sun is also a principal traditional symbol of the Karavas. Most of the Karavas belong to one or more of the Solar dynasties (Sun clans). See Surya clans for more information.

Although Nilames in Pageants now walk under umbrellas this is contrary to traditions and customs of Sri Lanka . See Radala for more information.

They seem to have some respect for the tooth relic as they are not walking under umbrellas, and the folded umbrellas are carried in the procession by temple attendants. As noted above, in feudal times the umbrellas were not carried by attendants but by the Nilames themselves

In the past, these ceremonial umbrellas were carried in Kandy pageants solely to honour the holy relics. Not for the glory of Nilames.
When traditions started to slip, the Sri Lankan government of the day was forced to put a stop to such abuses by Gazette notification of 17/04/1935. This notification states that the privileges and honours of Nilames were limited to the Kandyan costume only. They were not permitted to wear a sword or a sword belt or to have whip crackers, dancers or tom-tom beaters before them.
